Acoustic Fencing - An Effective Outdoor Noise Reduction

At Silent Treatment Soundproofing Ltd, we understand that unwanted noise doesn’t just affect the inside of your property – it can also disturb your outdoor spaces. Our acoustic fencing solutions are designed to reduce noise pollution from roads, railways, neighbouring properties, or commercial activity, creating a quieter, more comfortable environment for homes, businesses, and public spaces.

Whether you are a homeowner looking to enjoy peace in your garden, or a commercial site manager needing to reduce boundary noise, we provide professional advice and tailored acoustic fencing systems to meet your requirements.

How Acoustic Fencing Works

Acoustic fences are specially engineered barriers that absorb and deflect sound waves. Unlike standard timber fences, these solutions are constructed using high-density, interlocking panels that form a solid, continuous surface – ensuring no gaps for noise to pass through.

The result is a fence that significantly reduces the impact of airborne noise such as traffic, machinery, or voices. With a properly installed system, you can expect a noticeable difference in sound levels, helping to restore peace and privacy to your space.

Benefits of Acoustic Fencing

Noise Control

Proven to reduce traffic noise, industrial noise, and other outdoor disturbances.

Privacy & Security

Provides a strong, solid boundary to protect your property.

Durable & Weather Resistant

Built to withstand the elements with long-lasting performance.

Attractive Finish

Available in a range of styles and finishes to complement your surroundings.

Low Maintenance

Designed for long-term use with minimal upkeep.

Tailored to Your Project

Every site is different, which is why we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Our team will assess your property or site and recommend the most effective soundproof fencing system for your needs, taking into account your budget, performance expectations, and aesthetic preferences.

We work with homeowners, commercial sites, schools, and local authorities across the UK, offering a complete service from consultation to supply and installation.

The Rockwool NoiStop acoustic fencing is a purpose-built, modular noise barrier that is highly effective for reducing noise from outdoor machinery like air source heat pumps (ASHPs).

Unlike a standard garden fence that primarily reflects sound, NoiStop fencing uses a dense, sound-absorbing core to both block and dampen the noise.

Key Information and Construction

Feature

Detail

Manufacturer / Group
Rockwool
Primary Material
High-density Stone Wool (or mineral wool) core
Core Density
Typically 170-190 \text{ kg/m}^3 for superior acoustic performance
Construction
Stone wool core encased in a galvanised steel frame, often covered with wooden cladding (pine) for aesthetics or a mesh/fabric finish (Essential/Steel variants).
Design
Modular panels that are easy to install up to 2.7 meters tall without heavy lifting equipment.
Function
It is an absorptive barrier, meaning it not only blocks sound but also absorbs sound waves to significantly reduce ambient noise.
Depth
Slim design, typically around 6 \text{ cm} deep for the "Essential" variant.
Maintenance
Generally low maintenance due to the weather-resistant stone wool core and steel frame.

Description

Sound Insulation
DLR: 18 \text{ dB (Class B2)}
DLR: 21 \text{ dB (Class B2)}
Measures the acoustic isolation (ability to block sound from passing through the fence).
Sound Absorption
DL\alpha: 9 \text{ dB (Class A3)}
DL\alpha: 9-11 \text{ dB (Class A3)}
Measures the ability to absorb sound waves that hit the surface, preventing them from reflecting back (A3 is the highest absorption class).
Practical Noise Reduction
\approx 10 \text{ dB} (average)
\approx 9 \text{ to } 12 \text{ dB} (average)
This is the real-world noise reduction measured at a distance (e.g., 5 meters away from a 1.8 \text{ m} high barrier).

What the \text{dB} Reduction Means

• A 10 \text{ dB} reduction, which is the average performance, is perceived by the human ear as a reduction of approximately 50\% to 70\% in the loudness or perceived volume.
• This level of noise reduction is often sufficient to bring a noisy ASHP or other HVAC unit into compliance with regulatory limits at the nearest neighbor's property line.

Effectiveness for Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)

Rockwool NoiStop is particularly suitable for ASHPs because:

1. High Absorption: ASHP noise often includes low-frequency 'hum' or tonal components. The high-density stone wool core is engineered to absorb a wide range of frequencies, which is more effective than standard solid fences that simply reflect the noise, potentially causing it to bounce elsewhere.
2. Airtightness: The modular design allows for a good seal between panels and posts, which is crucial for blocking sound transfer.
3. Low Frequency Dampening: While low-frequency noise is notoriously difficult to block, the high mass and dense core of the NoiStop system provide better dampening than lighter acoustic barrier solutions.

Note: For a barrier to be most effective against an ASHP, it must be taller than the unit and placed as close as possible to the noise source, while maintaining the required safe clearance for unit airflow and servicing.
